Copyrights

{definition}: “The exclusive rights over an original work of an author expressed in a tangible form such as paintings, photographs, musical compositions, sound recordings, computer programs, books, poems, movies, and more.”

The copyright service

Our attorneys help authors and owners of rights to define the boundaries of copyright protection. To be protected, a work must be fixed in a tangible medium and have a minimum degree of originality. The term of copyright protection is generally 70 years after the death of the author. Under the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, works originating in one contracting state must enjoy the same protection in each of the other contracting states, without any formalities and regardless of the existence of protection in the work's country of origin. In some countries, such as the United States and China, there is a special copyright registration procedure.

Why and to whom is it useful?

Copyright protection is useful to those, whether individuals or legal entities, who create original works. Musicians, composers and performers protect their recordings from unauthorised copying or use. Producers control screen adaptations and derivative works of their films or secure revenue from licensing for television or broadcast platforms. Software developers protect their source code and can prevent illegal copying of software or applications. Publishers manage distribution and reproduction rights for works on all media. Companies protect their marketing materials, product designs and creations from unauthorised reproduction. In short, copyright protection is crucial for anyone creating original content, as it guarantees that their work will be protected against unauthorised use, enabling them to control and enhance the value of their creative efforts.
