The valuation of intellectual property assets is a complex exercise, a matter for specialists, influenced by many factors and characteristics that can impact their value. Why and to whom is it useful?
IP valuation is sometimes necessary because it is imposed by law (contributions to patent companies, mergers, splits, joint ventures, IFRS impairment tests, liquidations, etc.) but it is very useful for investors and venture capital companies, for start-ups, in the context of licensing negotiations or rights assignments, it facilitates litigation, tax management of transfers and the establishment of financial reports relating to IP assets. Banks and lenders use IP as collateral for loans and financing. Simple rational asset management is a major challenge for the informed manager: determining where the essential values of his company are to simply manage them better...
